Transcript of Michael's interview from
The Making of Cats
On his character, Munkustrap:
Munkustrap is really the story teller. He is entrusted with giving the information to the other maybe younger cats who have not been to the Jellicle Ball before. He gets up and says what they're here to do. He is also the caretaker of the kittens, and wants to make sure everybody is safe in all the Macavity scares. He’s there to protect the tribe, he is the protector.
On working with Sir John Mills, who played Gus:
One of the highlights is working with Sir John Mills.
I mean, who would have thought to see Gus performed by an actor of age and of theatrical hertitage. I mean, it really puts a whole spin on it that I don’t think has ever been seen before. Sir John, it’s like a lesson in acting and to be able to sit back; I don’t think that there was a dry eye each time, and to be around his energy is something that I will cherish my whole life.
On the difficulties of making the Cats video:
I didn’t really except it to be this difficult. It has probably been the greatest challenge, because the focus hasn’t really been on figuring out what to do, but on figuring out how to do it.
